The
Parent & Family Engagement Project
Parent & Family Engagement (PFE) in Adolescent Reproductive Health (ARH) is a project of the Center for Applied Research and Technical Assistance (CARTA). This site offers the latest research on parents and families and teen sexuality; information on PFE; examples and links to PFE programs, tools for starting PFE, and conducting PFE in diverse communities.
CARTA’s PFE project began in 2000 with support from the Annie E. Casey Foundation. The project was initiated in response to the growing evidence that parents and families play an important role in shaping the sexual behavior and reproductive health of teens. Studies repeatedly demonstrate youth who feel connected to their parents and families, who report having warm, supportive relationships with their parents; and whose parents encourage and practice open communication about sexuality (among other things) are less likely to initiate sexual activity and more likely to use contraception if they have sex.[1] The PFE project focuses on documenting strategies used by reproductive health providers to connect with parents and families and on providing resources to practitioners interested in enhancing their ability to work effectively with the significant adults in young peoples lives.
CARTA is very proud of the PFE project and information and resources we have been able to develop through this effort. We will continue to update this website as we identify and learn more about PFE activities, so be sure to visit often. Please use the links at the top of the page to navigate this site:
